The latest graphic novel from Fell Hound mixes the vibrant, bouncing energy of a sports manga with a sapphic love story. Hoping to locate her girlfriend Nico, whom she hasn’t heard from in more than a year, orphaned motorcycle enthusiast Avery transfers into Nico’s school, the prestigious Bridleham Academy. As Avery questions her peers regarding Nico’s whereabouts, she learns that Nico is known as “the devil” among her classmates. When she finally locates Nico, she warns Avery to stay away, mysteriously claiming “they’ll come after you.” Avery soon discovers that Nico has been secretly competing in the Seismic Ironclash Roulette, a motorcycle jousting club that’s exclusive to the academy. After Nico is injured during a match, Avery takes her place, a decision that exposes her to the web of conspiracy and wealth that initially forced Nico to withdraw from their relationship. The creator skillfully juxtaposes Bridleham’s classic buttoned-up academy atmosphere with dynamically rendered action sequences. Motorcycle jousting proves a unique and exciting draw, and readers will appreciate the comic’s thoughtful portrayal of mental health and grief. Nico and Avery have pale skin. Ages 13–up. (June)
