Recently, an author held a fundraiser at her book launch, an author invited her mother to an event, an author illustrator made her way to N.Y.C., and illustrators celebrated being part of an art show.

Double Trouble

Kristin Varner marked the launch of her middle grade graphic novel Dog Trouble (First Second) with an event at Liberty Bay Books in Poulsbo, Wa., in partnership with nonprofit and adoption center Kitsap Humane Society. Dog Trouble follows a boy named Ash during his time volunteering at an animal shelter and the effect it has on his opinions of canines. The event was also part of a donation drive for Kitsap Humane Society. Here, Varner (r.) with bookstore owner and author Suzanne Selfors (l.).

Pass the Bread

On November 9, Mystery to Me in Madison, Wis., gave Lisl Detlefsen a warm welcome for her sold-out event presenting her picture book Still There Was Bread (HarperCollins). The picture book, illustrated by David Soman, follows Little Pickle, who learns more about his family in the process of baking a special traditional bread with his Nana. Shown here Detlefsen (l.) and her mother, who inspired the Nana character, ready to share the freshly baked bread they brought for guests.

In the Big Apple

Beatrice Alemagna made the most of her recent trip to New York City, dropping by new bookshop and bistrot Sullaluna NYC on November 14 for a discussion and book signing for her picture book Pepper & Me (Hippo Park). The author-illustrator was also in New York to accept her second Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators Original Art Show. Pepper & Me follows the relationship that a girl forms with a scab she watches heal and is sad to see disappear.
