Herbert S. Bailey, Jr., former director of Princeton University Press, died on June 28. He was 89. Bailey, who was director of PUP from 1945 to 1986, joined the house in 1946 as a science editor.

Zev Birger, an Appreciation
The death June 6 of Zev Birger—the brilliant, charming, irrepressible director of the biennial Jerusalem International Book Fair, and Israel's champion promoting the flow of literature and culture between countries for many decades—from injuries sustained when he was struck by a motorcycle while crossing the street shocked and saddened thousands of people in many spheres of Zev's life, and most certainly in our publishing world. He had just celebrated his 85th birthday, vibrant, energetic, and already in talks about programs for the next fair in 2013.

Cavin Memorial Today
A celeberation of the life of Ruth Cavin will be held later today at 5:30 at the Salmagundi Club, located at 47 Fifth Avenue. A reception will follow. Cavin died in January at the age of 92. For the past 22 years, Cavin was associate publisher of Thomas Dunne Books, where she acquired and edited some 900 books.

William C. Kohler, founder of Vantage sales and marketing, died April 30 in Ocean City, N.J. He was 76.

Former Morrow V-P James Finkenstaedt Dies
James C. Finkenstaedt, former vice-president of William Morrow, died March 19. He was 90. Finkenstaedt, who had been active in the civil rights movement since the '50s, was influential in bringing well-known African-American writers to Morrow, such as Nikki Giovanni and Amiri Baraka

Wynne Jones Dies at 76
British fantasy author Diana Wynne Jones died on Saturday. She was 76. Jones, who had been writing fantasy novels for over 35 years, won a number of awards, including the British Fantasy Society’s Karl Edward Wagner Award and, in 2007, the Life Achievement Award from the World Fantasy Organization.

YA Author L.K. Madigan Dies at 47
Lisa Kay Wolfson, who published two novels under the pseudonym, L.K. Madigan, died Wednesday in Portland, Ore. She was 47. Wolfson's first novel, Flash Burnout (Houghton Mifflin, 2009) won the 2010 William C. Morris Debut Award, a prize given by the ALA for the best YA book by a first-time author.
