Several children's books are aging with grace as they mark notable milestones since their first publications. From beloved tales of animal characters to bedtime stories, publishers celebrate the anniversaries of stories that have stood the test of time.


A to Z Mysteries by Ron Roy Random House

The popular mystery series following the adventures of child detectives cracking cases in alphabetical order marks its 25th anniversary this fall. The original series featured 26 books and created two spinoffs, the A to Z Mysteries Super Edition series and Calendar Mysteries.


The Book of Mean People by Toni Morrison and Slade Morrison (Little, Brown, Nov. 8, $18.99; ISBN 978-0-316-34967-3)

The mother-and-son duo’s second picture book collaboration turns 20. The new edition of the story, which explores how children experience anger and negative emotions, features an afterword from author Jewell Parker Rhodes.


George and Martha by James Marshall (HarperCollins, $16.99; ISBN 978-0-395-16619-2)

Marshall’s picture book series marks 50 years since publication. A story of friendship between two hippos told in five vignettes, the George and Martha series contained eight books, and became a television series in 1999.


Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown, illus. by Clement Hurd (HarperCollins, $24.99 Aug. 30; ISBN 978-0-06-309181-8)

After sending young readers off to sweet dreams for 75 years, Goodnight Moon is being released in a deluxe slipcase edition featuring a new jacket and an afterword by Hurd’s son Thacher.


Hippos Go Berserk! by Sandra Boynton (Simon & Schuster, $17.99 Aug. 30; ISBN 978-1-66592-603-4)

First published in 1996, Boynton’s debut picture book celebrates 45 years of helping young readers learn to count as a hippopotamus party draws in many guests. This hardcover rerelease contains redesigned illustrations from Boynton.


The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer (Little, Brown, Oct. 11, $24.99; ISBN 978-0-316-45346-2)

Alex and Conner Bailey leave their world behind to enter the fairy tale universe of their books in this 10-year anniversary illustrated edition from author and Glee actor Colfer, including new full-page artwork from series illustrator Brandon Dorman.

Mary Pope Osborne, the author of the bestselling Magic Tree House series which turns 30 this year, reminisces about the lessons beloved characters Jack and Annie taught her, sourcing quotes from the original series and art from illustrator Murdocca.


Mrs. Piggle Wiggle by Betty MacDonald (HarperCollins, $16.99; ISBN 978-0-397-31713-4

MacDonald’s novel featuring the empathetic and positive teacher Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle commemorates 75 years, since its series launch in 1947, following with four more in the series. In 2016, the series got a spinoff, Missy Piggle Wiggle, Mrs. Piggle Wiggle’s niece; the books were written by Babysitters Club author Ann M. Martin and MacDonald’s great-granddaughter, Annie Parnell.


The Paper Flower Tree: A Tale from Thailand by Jacqueline Ayer (Enchanted Lion, $16.95; ISBN 978-1-59270-224-4)
