This month features the 10th anniversary of a fairy tale retelling; an author debut by a prolific Asian American actor; the gathering of a talented author trio; and the annual celebration of a beloved caterpillar.
Cinder Celebrations
Marissa Meyer celebrated the 10th anniversary of her blockbuster debut novel Cinder (Feiwel and Friends), and the March release of the collector’s edition with a Bookshop Santa Cruz virtual event, as well as an in-person signing at University Bookstore. The Bookshop Santa Cruz event took place on March 16, featuring Meyer in conversation with Prince Kai Fan Podcreator and host Bethanie Finger, as well as Lunar Chronicles polls and a fan art presentation. The in-person signing took place on March 18.
Troublemaker
On March 24, actor John Cho celebrated the publication of his debut middle grade novel Troublemaker (Little, Brown), which follows a Korean American boy during the L.A. riots, with a pair of virtual events. An Unlikely Story in Plainville, Mass., hosted a conversation with Cho and actor Kal Penn; and Bel Canto Books in Long Beach, Calif., presented a discussion among the author, Bel Canto owner Jhoanna Belfer (l.), and Add to Cart podcast host SuChin Pak (r.).
Authors Meet in Michigan
On Tuesday, March 15, (from l.) Theanne Griffith (The Magnificent Makers, Random House), Katherine Arden (Small Spaces series, Putnam), and James Buckley Jr. (Who Was...? series, Penguin Workshop) spoke with more than 1,000 children in Chelsea, Mich., for the first in-person Authors in Chelsea gathering since 2019. The community event brought in more than 50 families to meet the authors.
Commemorating a Caterpillar
March 20 marked the annual celebration of Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar (Philomel). To celebrate, Gymboree Play & Music locations throughout North America featured the book with story times in their classes during the week of March 14 through 19. In addition, all virtual classes included a special story time featuring the digital book that same week, with links for activities and book purchase shared with members.
