Adam Silvera has announced the third installment in his bestselling They Both Die at the End series, The Survivor Wants to Die at the End, which is set to release May 6 from Quill Tree Books, an imprint of HarperCollins Children’s Books.
The new book centers on the character of Paz, who grows tired of waiting for a call from Death-Cast, a service that announces the user will die that day. Instead, Paz takes his fate into his own hands, but is saved by Alano, heir of the Death-Cast empire. Together, the boys uncover a dangerous organization called the Death Guard and must fight to live to the end.
Silvera took to Instagram on January 15 to share details about the highly anticipated new installment. The Survivor Wants to Die at The End grapples with mental health, a subject close to the author’s heart. “It is definitely a novel about self unaliving ideation, which is something that I have struggled with for more than half my life,” Silvera said in his post. “And yes, that’s sad, but also, I’ve been in therapy for the past few years.”
The titles of the books in the series act as spoilers but still invite readers to enjoy the characters’ heartbreaking journey. With this forthcoming addition, Silvera wanted to note that this book and its title act differently.
“Since the title of this novel doesn’t quite do that, I want to tell you myself that neither of these boys will unalive themselves at the end of this novel,” Silvera said in his post. “And it is about battling mental illness, but it is not about dying. It is about wanting to die.”
Silvera’s stories of star-crossed lovers began with They Both Die at the End, which debuted in 2017; PW starred the book in its review and chose Silvera as one of its Spring 2025 Flying Starts The series debut drew the attention of BookTok, landing They Both Die at the End at the top of the New York Times YA paperback list for a year. The First to Die at the End, which released in 2022, also became a #1 bestseller. Readers can expect to see the Death-Cast tale on screens; a series adaptation is in development with Netflix.
And there’s still more to come on the literary front. The fourth book of the series, No One Knows Who Dies at the End, arrives in 2026.
