Lee Dean’s The Girl Who Flew Away is a moody, stylishly crafted graphic novel about a young woman of mixed race who struggles to make sense of the course of her life in 1970s America. Pregnant after an affair with her married boss, Greer is sent to Key West, Fla., to have the child in secrecy. While rooming in the home of a born-again, often judgmental Christian couple, Greer reflects on past lovers, nurtures a new relationship with a migrant gardener, and begins having vivid dreams about a little girl from the 1920s. In this 10-page excerpt, Greer is badgered by Kate, her overbearing host, and later shows drawings she's made of the little 1920s girl to Pablo, the gardener. The Girl Who Flew Away by Lee Dean is forthcoming from Iron Circus Comics in March.
