Peeping and Sleeping CL

``Peep- PEEP!'' When a noise in the night keeps Barry awake, his father suggests a quick trip outdoors, whereupon the two discover spring peepers down by the pond. Dozens of frogs are chirping away, ``puffed into bubbles--a bubble for every peep!'' The activity excites father and son so much that they throw off their slippers and hop and peep their way home. Then, just as Barry is about to fall asleep, a noisy surprise greets him from under his bed. This affectionate tale evokes the wonders of nature, the pleasures of staying up late and being out beneath a blanket of stars. The banter between father and son creates a warmth and ease, reflected in velvety, smudged pastels. Especially well captured is the trembling mixture of fear and giddiness that accompanies children's nighttime excursions. It is sure to elicit pleased peeps from the target audience--and maybe a hop or two. Ages 4-8. (Apr.)
