William the Backwards Skunk Rl
Chuck Jones, Rh Value Publishing. Random House Value Publishing, $1.99 (40pp) ISBN 978-0-517-56063-1
The same audience that follows the ""Road Runner'' cartoons will find a new friend in William the Backwards Skunk. For 25 years, author-illustrator Jones directed ``Road Runner,'' ``Bugs Bunny,'' ``Daffy Duck'' and other cartoons. Although this book has a text, it could easily be understood without narration. The story stars William, a skunk whose stripe runs down his front instead of his back. This causes the forest predators some confusion, since they don't know whom they can safely attack. In the end, with the aid of some ``Acme Skunk Stripe'' potion, William helps the other woodland creatures to impersonate skunks and drive away the predators for good. The pictures here make this seem like a cartoon turned book; Jones's pictures are simple and vivid. (3-up)
