The Better Brain Solution: How to Start Now—at Any Age—to Reverse and Prevent Insulin Resistance of the Brain, Sharpen Cognitive Function, and Avoid Memory Loss
Steven Masley. Knopf, $27.95 (384p) ISBN 978-1-5247-3238-7
As the number of people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia continues to rise, nutritionist and physician Masley (Smart Fat) proposes that this loss of cognitive function is closely associated with clogged arteries and poor blood-sugar control. Based on research by himself and others, Masley theorizes that diet and lifestyle changes can help make serious memory loss less likely. The steps outlined here are the same ones provided in his clinic, which he claims are associated with a 25% improvement in brain function for his patients, along with better heart health, blood-sugar control, and energy levels. In part one of the book, he uses research studies to outline the origins of memory loss (for instance, “Just one incident of serious head trauma can increase a person’s risk of Alzheimer’s by 450 percent”). The second part of the book covers nutrition, listing key nutrients, unhealthy chemicals, and 50 recipes. It also emphasizes the importance of lifestyle changes, such as increased physical activity and improved stress management. Concluding with an ample bibliography and list of additional resources, Masley’s book will appeal to anyone interested in a well-substantiated guide to mental health. (Jan.)
