Updated from a 1991 bestselling edition, this is an important and well-organized manual filled with solid advice for the parents of adolescents. The first section, The Basics, addresses parenting, types of families, communication and problem solving. The subsequent three sections are organized around the child by age: preteen (10-13); teen (14-17); and young adult (18-20). Topics covered include physical and psychological health and development as well as the social worlds of adolescents. Among the many charts are those that illustrate drugs and their effects, symptoms of depression and danger signs for anorexia. Throughout, the authors offer advice on how to communicate about issues from clothing to college applications, work and birth control. Significantly, the authors communicate the encouraging sense that they genuinely like adolescents. Resources are included at the end of each chapter and there are extensive bibliographic notes.
