Froggie's mother thinks that Froggie is old enough to marry, so she sends him in search of marital prospects. Froggie enters the world of romance with abandon and seems to have no trouble finding a different date every night. Miss Mouse turns out to be a disappointmentshe turns up her nose at flies prepared in various delicious ways. Miss Hedgehog doesn't mind dancing, but later on Froggie's mom has to pull quills from her poor bandaged son. After pursuing a cat, a squirrel and a bat, a disheartened Froggie crawls off to languish beneath a lily pad and discovers a gorgeous girl-frog reading a copy of Frogue magazine. Hellard's book has cardboard flaps that fold down to reveal lines of text as the romantic chronicle unfolds. Her fluid cartoon style and chromatic watercolors lend themselves nicely to this entertaining, amphibious love story. Ages 3-8. (May)
