Rumors and Whispers
Marilyn Levy. Fawcett Books, $3.95 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-449-70327-4
Sarah Alexander, a high school senior, has recently moved from Ohio to California with her parents and older brother, Doug. The adjustment is rough for the girl, who is too self-absorbed to befriend anyone. The only new people in Sarah's life who demonstrate any kindness are Mr. Hill, her art teacher, and David Light, an intelligent, good-looking classmate with whom she ultimately has a relationship. Sarah's happiness with David is marred when her brother is suddenly disowned for reasons her parents won't divulge and Mr. Hill is suspended from school because he has AIDS. Although readers will readily empathize with Sarah, it's somewhat disappointing that the source of her emerging strength stems solely from her alliance with David. Levy incorporates some crucial data into the story, however--on the communicability of the AIDS virus and the need for sexual responsibility. Ages 12-up. (Dec.)
