Grimms' Other Tales: A New Selection
Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm. Canongate Books, $0 (159pp) ISBN 978-0-86241-066-7
These are actual selections of little-known stories from the brothers' vast collection, full of horrifying touches, such as a particular liver being eaten and vomited several times in the course of a tale. Nearly all the stories are solidly told, but they cannot be consumed in one or two sittings without tedium taking over. Instead, readers should sample these tales in small doses, lingering over the familiar motifs and unusual turns of plots. There are many small gems among other, rougher efforts, but all will be of interest to scholars or fans of the genre. Ages 8-12. (July)
