Good Night, Baby Moon
James Mitchem, illus. by Claire Patane. DK, $12.99 (12p) ISBN 978-1-4654-6307-4
A family of rabbits helps children get a sense of the phases of the moon in a board book that features a light-up moon on its cover. Quiet rhymes introduce the rabbits’ confusion when the moon begins to disappear (“Nights came and went,/ and they wanted to know.../ why had the moon changed?/ Where did half of it go?”) and their relief when it reappears. Serene digitally collaged artwork shows the rabbits in silhouette amid rows of distant houses, a farm’s field, and a dense forest, a pale photographic moon looming high in the night sky (its phases are labeled on several spreads). A nifty mix of bedtime story and astronomy lesson. Ages 2–5. (Sept.)
