Sports Heroes (When I Grow Up)
Clare Lloyd, illus. by Lucy Semple. DK, $8.99 (18p) ISBN 978-1-4654-9093-3
This nonfiction board book, part of DK’s When I Grow Up series, relays eight international athletes’ journeys from childhood to triumph. Page headers present the subject’s name and an encircled headshot, the athlete’s sport, and an illustrated version of their home country’s flag (figures include Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, Japanese figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu, and British swimmer Ellie Simmonds). Spreads describe each athlete’s youth and adult accomplishments: “big basketball star” LeBron James “uses his basketball success to help other kids achieve their dreams.” Friendly illustrations by Semple show each athlete in motion, complemented by photographs. Though the smattering of athletes feels random, the assortment is diverse, and the read-aloud text will appeal to caregivers hoping to inspire their youngest readers with real-life examples of athletic prowess. Ages 2–5. [em](Mar.)
