In celebration of Black History Month, Blooming in Motion is a coloring book created by Amber Barbee Pickens to both educate and entertain, as well as highlight some of the notable figures from Black dance history. A dancer and artist herself, Barbee Pickens draws upon her own personal inspirations to create these striking and inspiring images and inform readers and colorers of these figures' contributions to Black history and the arts as a whole.
A “love letter to all the Black dancers that have paved and continue to pave the way”, Blooming in Motion showcases stunning illustrations that also serve to educate. From familiar names to faces who might be new to readers, the book helps readers discover more about the powerful impact that Black artists, dancers, choreographers and performers have had on the world. Amber Barbee Pickens is a multi-talented entertainer from Dallas, Texas, an exceptional triple threat of talent who graduated from The Julliard School as a professionally-trained dancer, actor, and singer.
During the 2020 pandemic, Barbee Pickens explored her creative endeavors and challenged herself to produce a coloring book to recognize and honor Black trailblazers in the world of dance. The finished product, Blooming in Motion, features original illustrations of 20 Black dancers and 60+ blooming floral mandalas. The book is published by Art Belongs to People Publishing (ABtP) and distributed internationally by Ingram Books.
