Short story writer Stuart Dybek is having a good week. Yesterday, the MacArthur Foundation announced that Dybek is one of two writers named a $500,000 “genius” grant winner this year, and today, the Dungannon Foundation announced that Dybek would also receive its $30,000 Rae Award for the Short Story, which honors American or Canadian writers whose short fiction has made a “significant contribution in the discipline of the short story as an art form.”
The award was founded in 1986 by Michael M. Rae, a short story aficionado and book collector who died in 1996, and is not pegged to a specific story, book or body of work by an author, but to the author’s impact on the genre overall. Past winners include Alice Munroe, Deborah Eisenberg and Richard Ford.
