Spotlight on Celebrity AuthorsThough they are well accustomed to attracting attention on screen or stage, a small gallery of actors and producers (and one Olympic athlete) are stepping into another role—that of children's book author. Some have played this part before. Jamie Lee Curtis has again teamed up with illustrator Laura Cornell to create a picture book to bolster kids' egos, I'm Gonna Like Me: Letting Off a Little Self-Esteem, due from HarperCollins/Cotler. John Lithgow has written his third picture book for Simon & Schuster, Micawber, with art by C.F. Payne. This tale of a Central Park squirrel who becomes a passionate painter is packaged with a CD.
Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin's first novel is also on the S&S fall list. Deaf since birth, the author centers her middle-grade story, Deaf Child Crossing, on a deaf girl whose relationship with her best friend is changing. Other S&S authors are actor-director-producer Spike Lee and his producer wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, who have penned a picture book, Please, Baby, Please. Featuring art by Kadir Nelson, this story focuses on the wayward ways of toddlers, who wake up the household at five in the morning, wear breakfast on their heads and make giant waves in the bath.
An actress whose career has spanned six decades is also featured in the S&S fall catalogue. The publisher is issuing a new edition of Nibbles and Me, a tale Elizabeth Taylor wrote and illustrated when she was 13 and already a star from her performance in National Velvet. This account of her pet chipmunk's antics on and off the set includes a new introduction by the author and previously unpublished photos and illustrations from her private collection.
It's easy to envision comedian Jerry Seinfeld kvetching about the pitfalls of Halloween: the agony of wearing a Superman costume that looks like pajamas and getting yucky trick-or-treat candy. He does just this in the pages of a new Little, Brown picture book, Halloween, illustrated by James Bennett.
And an Olympic gold medalist glides from the short-track speed skating rink into bookstores this fall with Journey: The Autobiography of Apolo Anton Ohno, written with Nancy Richardson. All of the above—and their publishers—surely hope that, along with the "lights!" and "cameras!" there will be cash-register "action!"
