The Stakes Rise for Chart Toppers

New records were set in 2003 for hardcover unit sales. The year's #1 fiction bestseller, The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, sold more than 5.7 million copies, and the nonfiction leader, The Purpose-Driven Life by Rick Warren, sold about 11.3 million. The previous record in fiction was set 10 years ago (1993), when Robert James Waller's The Bridges of Madison County sold more than 4.3 million copies. In nonfiction, the previous record was about 8.4 million for Bruce Wilkinson's The Prayer of Jabez, set in 2001.

Over the past 30 years (that's how long this writer has been compiling these stats), a lot has changed, yet a lot has remained the same. Well-known authors dominated the fiction charts back then, as they do now, but, of course, the names are different. How-to and current events are perennially among the most popular nonfiction high rollers. What has changed dramatically is the unit sales required to be among our annual bestsellers, and the cost of hardcover books. The fiction leader 30 years ago was James A. Michener's Centennial, with sales of 330,289 copies. Here's what we wrote: 'This figure is even more impressive when one considers that the book's price tag broke all previous records for a novel. After 175,000 copies at $10.95 were printed, Random House raised the price to an astounding $12.50.' Thirty years ago, we were also impressed that three novels made the top of the 1974 charts: WatershipDown by Richard Adams, Jaws by Robert Benchley and then-70-year-old Martha Craven's I Heard the Owl Call My Name. Nonfiction was led by Marabel Morgan's The Total Woman, offering marital advice from a Christian perspective and published by Revell, a Christian publisher. It outsold the book that dominated the weekly general bestseller lists, All the President's Men by Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, the two Pulitzer Prize—winning journalists who broke the Watergate story. Morgan's book sold about 369,000 copies, compared to about 280,000 for #2.

Two decades later, in the 1994 year-end feature, the numbers needed to make the annual list were considerably higher. The big news that year was that a record number of hardcover titles, 17—eight fiction and nine nonfiction—went over the one-million mark. In fiction, the leader was The Chamber by John Grisham, with sales of more than three million; in nonfiction, it was In the Kitchen with Rosie by Rosie Daley (she was Oprah's personal chef) at the top spot, with sales of more than 5.4 million. That record of 17 books with annual sales of one million and more still stands. And even though the 2003 chart leaders have higher unit sales than ever before, the number of books with sales over the one-million mark is a second-best 14.

More novels than ever had sales over 100,000 in 2003—128 to be exact. The previous high was 125 fiction books in 2002. There were fewer hardcover nonfiction 100,000+ sellers in 2003, only 121, compared with the record 130 in 2002. But there were more nonfiction million-copy bestsellers—six in 2003, compared with just two a year earlier.

The phenomenon last year was Dan Brown and his fourth book, The Da Vinci Code. In fact, back in March 2003, Doubleday (Brown's third publisher) noted that customers had bought as many hardcover copies of Da Vinci in two days as Brown's earlier books had netted in total. Now, not only does Brown's novel rank as the fastest-selling hardcover fiction to date, he's also managed to place all his backlist on the paperback charts, including Angels & Demons, leading the mass market lists for 47 weeks. The ingredients for his success were many—in-house enthusiasm, good buzz, good reviews and a thriller that reached out not only to suspense readers but also to art enthusiasts and people interested in religion.

This year, there were 10 debut novels with sales of more than 100,000, and the bestseller among them was The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom, whose Tuesdays with Morrie had a run at the top of our year-end chart back in 1999 and was in the top 15 two other years (that book, published in 1997, sold more than six million hardcover copies). Also on the list is Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones, with sales in 2003 of more than 902,000 copies, bringing that book's two-year total to about 2,815,900.

All the other fiction high rollers are the usual crowd on these year-end lists; you know the names—Grisham, Clancy, Patterson, Sparks, Karon, King, Steel, Cussler and Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins. The 15 fiction runners-up are also by veteran novelists; almost all have, in the past, been on a top-30 list and even a top-15 annual list. The one exception is Lauren Weisberger's The Devil Wears Prada, a first fiction that had a 24-week tenure on PW's weekly charts (one less than Grisham's The King of Torts).

Nonfiction's Stars

The interest in religion and inspiration books continues to grow in the U.S., as evidenced by the bestselling book, The Purpose-Driven Life from evangelical Christian publisher Zondervan. Author Rick Warren is the founding pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif., one of America's largest and best-known churches. The book's launch was supported by a national '40 Days of Purpose' campaign sponsored by Saddleback Church involving more than 1,550 churches representing all 50 states and nine countries. Clearly, the most effective handselling is via the churches. Sales at both Christian stores and general bookstores were fantastic.

The nation's concern with the rise in obesity made for lots of healthy sales for diet and fitness titles; three of them grabbed the #2, #3 and #4 slots for 2003: The South Beach Diet, Atkins for Life and The Ultimate Weight Solution. Each had a special ingredient for strong sales: for South Beach, Rodale's direct-mail muscle got the word out to retailers; by the summer there were more than 1.5 million copies in print. That number increased to nearly five million by November. How? Reorders from all outlets, especially the mass merchandisers. As for the other two, the Dr. Atkins brand just continues to sell and sell, and Dr. Phil's TV show certainly had a positive effect.

In fact, the celebrity factor continues to be key in nonfiction sales. Authors need a platform from which they can talk about their books and their subject. Memoirs and biographies of well-known people had a good run in 2003. Hillary Rodham Clinton's was one of the fastest memoirs out of the gate, with sales of more than 200,000 before its June 9 laydown. Barnes & Noble sold about 40,000 copies in the first 24 hours, a record for a nonfiction book at the chain. Another memoir, Kate Remembered by A. Scott Berg, was a surprise bestseller—the author, a friend of the actress, finished the biography in 2001 and the publisher had already had it typeset. Within two weeks of her death on June 29, about 560,000 copies were in stores. Fred Rogers's show was a children's favorite for more than 30 years and he penned a book, The World According to Mister Rogers: Important Things to Remember. He died about nine months before it was published, but his adoring fans supported the book to the tune of more than 519,000 copies sold in 2003.

Many of the other books in the top 15 were penned by political pundits from the right and left—Al Franken, Bill O'Reilly, Michael Moore, Anne Coulter. Combined 2003 sales for their bestsellers totaled more than 3.3 million copies. Controversy was quite a salable commodity last year.

Bestseller No-Shows

Eighteen of the hardcover novels that sold more than 100,000 copies in 2003 have yet to land on one of PW's weekly charts; in nonfiction, 35 titles never landed on the weekly charts. While most of these books sold fewer than 125,000 copies, there were some higher numbers among them. Also, there were books among the top 30 with minimal tenures on the weekly charts. In fiction's top 15, Bantam's BabylonRising by Tim LaHaye and Greg Dinallo—#14, with sales of more than 700,000 copies—had only a two-week run. In nonfiction, #20, Curves by Gary Heavin, was on PW's weekly list for only one week; and #21, I Am a Soldier, Too: The Jessica Lynch Story by Rick Bragg, was on the charts for only three weeks; both books claim sales of more than 400,000 in 2003.

As always, all our calculations are based on shipped and billed figures supplied by publishers for new books released in 2002 and 2003 (a few books published earlier that continued their tenures on our 2003 weekly lists and/or our monthly religion lists are included). These figures reflect only 2003 sales—publishers were instructed not to include book club and overseas transactions. We also asked publishers to take into account returns through February 1. Sales figures in these pages should not be considered final net sales. For many of these books, especially those published in the latter half of the year, final returns are not yet calculated.

Also note the tables 'Who's on First?' and 'What's on Second?', in which we compare PW's top 15 rankings with how these books fared at selected independents, chains and online booksellers. This year, for the first time, we are including rankings from Nielsen BookScan. Still, even with all these reports, we lack detailed information on how these books fared at some of the mass merchandisers, specialty stores and in the gift retail market.
