Barnes & Noble has launched a nationwide program, "Kids' Book Hangout," intended to give young readers ages 6–12 a space to talk about books in its stores while playing games and activities.
The bookseller has teamed up with Penguin Random House for its first Kids' Book Hangout, to be held in all Barnes & Noble stores on Saturday, July 28, at 2 p.m. The four featured books are: Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson; More Scrawny Than Brawny by Aaron Reynolds; The Basque Dragon by Adam Gidwitz; and She Loves You (Yeah, Yeah, Yeah) by Ann Hood.
"With the new Barnes & Noble Kids' Book Hangout, we’ve created a forum for young readers to gather in our stores to discover books, have fun, and experience the joy of reading with other kids in their community," said Stephanie Fryling, B&N v-p of merchandising, children’s books. "The Hangout is designed to introduce young readers to exciting titles, as well as help them to find the books, authors, and series that they will love for years to come."
At the events, booksellers will host activities related to the books and give participants book-related giveaways to take home. The store will also sell each of the four book selections for the program at 20% off shelf price.
The program will be held seasonally and added to the bookseller’s other offerings for young readers, including its weekly Storytimes program and its Summer Reading program.
