This month, Michelle Argyle at Melissa Williams Design reimagines the cover of Just a Little Broken by Le’vian Dae.

Design Note 1: The original cover nails the moodiness of the book but feels disjointed. I kept the idea of a dark forest and a girl but decided something more detailed was in order, which involved showing a sleeve tattoo on the girl’s arm—an important element in the story.
Design Note 2: I wanted something a little more elegant for the title but decided to “break up” the word “Broken” to mimic the meaning.
Design Note 3: The original image of the girl I found was in perfect focus, but by using some blur tools in Photoshop, I was able to create a better depth of field to draw the viewer’s eye to the girl’s eye after reading the title.
Design Note 4: The misty moonlight and the orange glow around the title help create a supernatural feel for this chilling, magical tale.
