HarperCollins has announced that it will publish two new books by Veronica Roth, bestselling YA author of the Divergent series and the Carve the Mark duology. Joanna Volpe at New Leaf Literary & Media sold world English rights to Katherine Tegen, v-p and publisher of her eponymous imprint at HarperCollins Children’s Books.

First up from Roth will be a collection of short stories, titled The End and Other Beginnings: Stories from the Future, which take place in future worlds that feature advanced technology. Among the stories is “Inertia,” which has been optioned for film by Fox 2000 in a preempt. Temple Hill partners Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen (The Fault in Our Stars; The Maze Runner; Love, Simon) will produce with Pouya Shahbazian (Divergent; Love, Simon; American Honey). Jack Thorne, who wrote the scripts for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Wonder, is attached as screenwriter.

Roth told PW, “All the stories in The End are set in futuristic worlds—whether post-apocalyptic, or near-future, or on another planet entirely—but what really unites them is that the characters are trying to process some kind of ending. That’s something I remember about my teenage years: learning how to lose things, whether it was friends or (in my case) boyfriends or loved ones, whether that loss was to death or growing apart or just growing, period. So whatever worlds these stories are in, they are always about that profoundly human feeling—about the first few times we practice resilience.”

Roth first burst onto the YA scene with her 2011 debut, Divergent; this dystopian trilogy launch earned Roth a PW Flying Start and bestseller status. A film adaptation was released in 2014, starring Shailene Woodley as heroine Tris Prior. Subsequent films, based on Roth’s sequels Insurgent and Allegiant, followed in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

Roth then released a YA duology, Carve the Mark, which launched in 2017 in 33 languages, in a simultaneous global release. The second and final book, The Fates Divide, was published this past April. To date, sales of both the Divergent series and the Carve the Mark duology have reached 42 million copies.

Reflecting on the impact of past achievements on her creative process, Roth said, “The success of Divergent has given me a strong foundation and I’m extremely fortunate to have that. I get to keep writing and I have readers: those are the two most important things to me. When I get overwhelmed, I remind myself of that. It sounds cheesy, but all my mom asked of me growing up was to do my best, and if I did, the outcome wasn’t that important. I think of that every single time I sit down to work. I push to be better, so my “best” is always changing, but I try not to think about the outcome, how a book will sell, how well it will be received. I can’t control that. I can only control my work.”

The End and Other Beginnings: Stories from the Future is slated for publication in fall 2019; Roth’s untitled YA novel is anticipated in 2021. Tegen said of the acquisition, “I am thrilled to be publishing two new books by Veronica. The short stories in The End and Other Beginnings are absolutely breathtaking and beautifully inventive. And the stand-alone YA novel promises to be another epic adventure.”

While Roth was “reluctant to share much [about the new novel] because it’s at such an early stage,” she said, “I’m doing a lot of research. I’m so happy to have another YA book in the works with Katherine because she has such a keen editorial eye, and we have a great relationship.”

Also forthcoming from Roth is an adult science-fiction novel, which will be published in spring 2020 by John Joseph Adams Books, an imprint of HMH.
