This week, Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver hit the road; an author visits the state she grew up in; SCBWI celebrates Crystal Kite Winners past and present; and Diane Kredensor hosts a “super” storytime.

Out of This World

Earlier this summer, actor Henry Winkler and SCBWI executive director Lin Oliver (r.), co-authors of the forthcoming children’s book Alien Superstar (Abrams/Amulet, Oct.), set out on a pre-pub tour in Chicago, New York City, Washington, D.C. (for ALA Annual), and Pittsburgh (for Children’s Institute). The book is about the humorous adventures of an alien who crash-lands on Earth in Hollywood and is cast on a TV show. Over the course of their travels, Winkler and Oliver met with booksellers, librarians, and members of the media. Here, they attend a lunch with Barnes & Noble staffers Gina Rizzo (second from l.), Shannon Devito, and Stephanie Pinheiro at Rosa Mexicano in New York City.

'Gonna Rise Up'

Renée Watson (l.) and Ellen Hagan recently visited Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Lexington, Ky., for an event in honor of their novel Watch Us Rise (Bloomsbury, Feb.), a socially conscious coming-of-age tale. Hagan grew up in Kentucky, and she was able to read and share her work with friends and family. The authors also spoke with students at the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts, Hagan’s alma mater.

'Let’s Go Fly a Kite'

This year’s SCBWI Florida Mid-Year Workshop in Orlando, Fla., held June 7–8, brought together a number of past and present Crystal Kite Winners of the Southeast Division, all of whom hail from the Sunshine State. (From l.): Rob Sanders (Outer Space Bedtime Race, Random House), Kerry O’Malley Cerra (Just a Drop of Water, Sky Pony), Zebo Ludvicek (Mouse, Putnam), and Jan Eldredge (Evangeline of the Bayou, HarperCollins/Balzer + Bray).

A Super Storytime

On July 13, author and illustrator Diane Kredensor read from her new picture book Superbuns (Aladdin, July 2) to children at Book Culture in Long Island City, N.Y. The book follows the story of a bunny named Buns who shows that anyone can be “super” just by being kind. In addition to her work as an author, Kredensor is an artist, director, and producer for animated series, including Pinky and the Brain, Clifford the Big Red Dog, and WordWorld.
