It’s a Voting Party

Don Tate (l.) and Wade Hudson (r.) held the launch for their new picture book, The Day Madear Voted (Penguin/Paulsen) on July 13 at the East Orange Public Library in East Orange, N.J. The picture book follows brothers Charlie and Ralph as they accompany their mother to vote for the first time in 1969. The local NAACP chapter conducted voter registration during the event, which was held in partnership with Watchung Booksellers of Montclair, N.J. Goal!

Author Elizabeth Rusch celebrated the release of her YA nonfiction book A Greater Goal: The Epic Battle for Equal Pay in Women's Soccer-and Beyond (Greenwillow) with a launch party at NW Hostel Café in Portland, Ore., on July 13. Rusch gave a reading from her book and watched the pre-Olympic U.S.-Costa Rica match where the U.S. team walked away with the win.

The PJ Library, a literary program that offers books to Jewish families, recently celebrated its 18th anniversary with a series of events across New York City. Here, festivities took place at the Temple Sinai of Roslyn on Long Island last month.

Start a Riot

Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena, Calif., gave author Sarah Lariviere a warm welcome on July 16 for the launch of her new YA book, Riot Act (Knopf), set in an alternate 1991. In the book, teen Gigi attempts to put on an illegal performance following the death of her best friend as an act of defiance. Lariviere held a conversation with fellow author Trish Lundy, followed by a book signing.
