Recently, an author was a guest at an international book festival, a community welcomed an author for a reading, award winners shared their book, and an author spoke at a New York City bookstore.

Full of Freude

On July 14, Nelly Buchet made an appearance at the annual BilderBuch Festival, hosted by BuchBox! bookstore in Berlin, to give a reading of the German edition of her new picture book Big Sister, Long Coat, illustrated by Rachel Katstaller (NorthSouth). In the book, a sister duo manage to turn a rainy day into a bonding experience.

A Love Letter to Summer

Renée Watson stopped by the Open Street block party in Harlem on July 20 for a reading of her picture book Summer Is Here, illustrated by Bea Jackson (Bloomsbury). Hosted by Sugar Hill Creamery, independent day school The Studio School, and nonprofit Marcus Meets Malcolm, the event offered ice pops, jump-roping activities, and a book signing with Watson.

Museum Welcomes Winners

On July 19, Tomás Rivera Book Award winners Michael Genhart (r.) and John Parra (l.) held an event at the National Museum of the American Latino in Washington, D.C. The collaborators shared their picture book Spanish Is the Language of My Family (Holiday House/Porter), with families visiting the museum. The picture book, simultaneously released in English and Spanish, follows a boy’s preparations for a spelling bee, which helps him to bond with his grandmother.

A Day at the Strand

New York City bookstore The Strand and reader supported newsletter Feminist Giant co-hosted the launch event for Seema Yasmin’s YA novel Unbecoming (S&S). Set in a future America where abortions are federally banned, the book centers Laylah and Noor, who work together to create a secret guide to help those in need gain access to abortion care. Yasmin held a conversation with Feminist Giant writer Mona Eltahawy (l.) and signed copies of her book for guests.
