Recently, an author launched a new fantasy series, a cooking class highlighted Vietnamese culture, an illustrator made an appearance on TV, and an author returned to his hometown for a release.

An ‘Extraordinary’ Encounter

On August 27, Ransom Riggs (r.) celebrated the launch of his fantasy trilogy starter, Sunderworld, Vol. I: The Extraordinary Disappointments of Leopold Berry (Dutton), with an event at the Historic Aircraft Theatre in Franklin, Ind., hosted by Wild Geese Bookshop. More than 400 fans attended the event, which featured Riggs in conversation with author John Green (l.).


Cooking Up a Debut

On August 13, booksellers and influencers gathered at cooking school Eatz in Los Angeles in honor of Trinity Nguyen’s sapphic YA romance, A Banh Mi for Two (Henry Holt).The 13-person class tried their hand at preparing Vietnamese spring rolls, rice pudding, and, fittingly, pork and vegetarian banh mis. Nguyen’s debut novel follows Lan, a foodie blogger, and Vivi, a first generation Vietnamese American girl curious about her culture, as they use food to connect with themselves and one another.


Under the Sea

Katherine Roy (l.), illustrator of the picture book Sea Without a Shore (Norton Young Readers), made an appearance on KATU Portland’s Afternoon Life ahead of the book’s September 10 release. Written by Barb Rosenstock, the book highlights the life and ecosystems within the Sargasso Sea. During her appearance, Roy spoke with anchor Hannah Olsen about her research in preparation for the book and shared early sketches.


Hometown Hero

Adam Rosenbaum celebrated the release of The Ghost Rules (Holiday House) with a hometown launch at Parnassus Books in Nashville held on August 14. The middle grade tale follows Elwood McGee, who can see ghosts and uses his ability to find his dead brother Noah. Rosenbaum was joined by Kristin O’Donnell Tubb for a conversation and signing.
