First Winter Snowflakes Seen on Fifth Ave.

In an annual holiday tradition, Saks Fifth Avenue hosted its sixth annual Snowflake Spectacular last week, unveiling its newly decorated store windows. As in past years, the windows were tied to a limited-edition picture book (which HarperCollins is publishing exclusively for Saks). This year’s book is Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Flake by Mike Reiss, illustrated by Roger Chouinard, about a snowflake’s journey from a cloud down to earth. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the book goes to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s Thanks and Giving campaign. Photo: Jemal Countess/WireImage.

Horowitz’s Transatlantic Tour

British author Anthony Horowitz recently crossed the Atlantic to tour the U.S. in support of Crocodile Tears (Philomel, Nov.), the eighth book in his bestselling series about teenage spy Alex Rider. Horowitz stopped by bookstores and libraries in and around New York City, Boston, Detroit, St. Louis, Raleigh, Atlanta and Washington D.C. Here, Horowitz visits with members of the River City Readers program, which was developed by Left Bank Books in St. Louis to give books to students who might not otherwise be able to own them.

La Vie Schmais

This month, author Libby Schmais is going on a tour of the digital variety, discussing her first YA novel, The Pillow Book of Lotus Lowenstein (Delacorte, Dec.), about a Francophile teen who feels stifled by life in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Schmais is “visiting” more than a dozen Web sites during her blog tour (the sites and schedule are available on her Web site). She will offer a French “word of the day” at each stop; readers who collect the words can enter a contest for a Sephora gift certificate. Here, Schmais visits one of her frequent writing spots, The Joyce Bakeshop in Brooklyn’s Prospect Heights.
