Parrrrrty Down

Earlier this month Booktopia Books and Gifts for Children in Bethesda, Md., lowered the gangplank for author Mary Quattlebaum to celebrate her new picture book, Pirate Vs. Pirate, illustrated by Alexandra Boiger (Disney-Hyperion, Mar.), about a pair of pirates facing off to see who’s the top seadog. Along with Quattlebaum, staffers dressed up in buccaneer garb and shared pirate lingo and poetry with attendees (some of whom also came dressed as pirates). Seen here, looking their fiercest are (l. to r.) Booktopia owner Nina Embrey, Quattlebaum’s husband Christopher David, Quattlebaum, and Amanda Malamut, Laura Wroten, and Sarah Rubin, all of Booktopia. Photo: Kevin Embrey.

Have ‘Ladder,’ Will Travel

They may have published a book together, but author Maya Soetoro-Ng and illustrator Yuyi Morales met for the first time at a lunch event last week set up by Book Passage in Corte Madera, Calif., in honor of their new picture book, Ladder to the Moon (Candlewick, Apr.). The event was part of the last leg of the author’s 10-city tour for the book. Soetoro-Ng (seated, l.) and Morales (seated, r.) are seen here with the events team at Book Passage. On the Road with Nic Sheff

This week author Nic Sheff is wrapping up a 10-city tour of high schools across the U.S., in support of his second memoir, We All Fall Down: Living with Addiction (Little, Brown, Apr.), which follows his 2008 book Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines (S&S/Atheneum). Sheff’s tour began with stops in New York City, Boston, and Burlington, Vt., before heading to cities in Michigan and Illinois, then out west to Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. In his appearances, Sheff is discussing his drug addiction with students, who in turn often open up about their own experiences with drugs and alcohol. Here, Sheff speaks with students at Jackson High School in Seattle in an event coordinated by University Book Store. Little, Brown partnered with the Partnership for a Drug-Free America’s “You’re Not Alone” campaign, and Sheff has been posting tour diary entries at www.drugfree.org.
