Reedy Visits ‘Today’

Author Trent Reedy made an appearance on NBC’s Today Show last Friday to discuss his debut novel, Words in the Dust (Scholastic/Levine, Jan.), which was the most recent selection for Al Roker’s Book Club for Kids. The book centers on a 13-year-old girl living in modern-day Afghanistan, and was inspired by an Afghan girl Reedy met while serving in the military. Click here to watch Reedy’s segment on the show. Roker also announced his next pick: Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Big First Book Donation

The Oprah Winfrey Show has become synonymous with major giveaways in recent years, and Winfrey managed to get in another big one before her show came to an end. During the May 23rd episode, audience members held up 13,000 books, which will be donated to schools and programs nationwide with the help of nonprofit organization First Book. In all, thanks to Oprah audience member donations to First Book, more than 25,000 books will be distributed to low-income communities in the U.S. Photo: PRNewsFoto/First Book, George Burns.
