Dread Nation by Justina Ireland. HarperCollins/Balzer + Bray, $17.99; ISBN 978-0-06-257060-4. In this alternate-history horror tale, shortly after Jane McKeene was born, the dead rose and attacked the living, effectively ending the Civil War. The YA novel earned a starred review from PW.

The Funeral by Matt James. Groundwood (PGW, dist.), $18.95; ISBN 978-1-55498-908-9. In his first outing as author, Canadian artist James (When the Moon Comes) examines the way the funeral of a distant relative feels to a child. The picture book earned a starred review from PW.

Mommys Khimar by Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow, illus. by Ebony Glenn. Salaam Reads, $17.99; ISBN 978-1-5344-0059-7. Mommy, an African-American Muslim woman, has a closet full of the beautiful flowing headscarves called khimars, which her daughter explores in this picture book. People Don't Bite People by Lisa Wheeler, illus. by Molly Idle. Atheneum, $17.99; ISBN 978-1-4814-9082-5. In a combination of listicle, admonishment, and pep talk, the well-matched Wheeler (Babies Can Sleep Anywhere) and Idle (the Flora books) remind children that they are too long in the tooth, so to speak, to be chomping on others.
