V Is for Voting by Kate Farrell, illus. by Caitlin Kuhwald. Holt, $18.99; ISBN 978-1-250-23125-3. This rhyming abecedarian seeks to imbue a basic awareness of voting and American history, motivating children to get involved from an early age.

My Stinky Summer by S. Bug by Paul Meisel. Holiday House, $17.99; ISBN 978-0-8234-4053-5. Meisel’s third Nature Diary showcases the stink bug in a story that spans five months, from early June, when the brown marmorated stink bug narrator arrives, to early October, when S. Bug tucks itself under tree bark for the winter.

Playing Possum by Jennifer Black Reinhardt. Clarion, $17.99; ISBN 978-1-328-78270-0. In this story exploring friendship and self-understanding, Alfred the opossum is perpetually nervous, so he often instinctively “freezes and plays dead,” eventually making friends with other animals in the forest who have unique defense mechanisms.
