As readers know, Narwhal (of Narwhal and Jelly fame) has had more than a few underwater adventures. But what happens when Narwhal journeys onto land with BFF Jelly to party with actual unicorns?

Narwhal chatted with PW about their latest book, Narwhalicorn and Jelly (Tundra, Oct.), number seven in the early graphic novel series by Ben Clanton. Topics discussed included unicorns, waffles, unicorns, waffle pudding, marshmallows, land vs. sea, and so much more.

I’ve always wanted to meet a unicorn and I hear you’re an expert. What can you share?

I’ve always wanted to meet a unicorn too! And recently, my wish came true! Actually, I got to meet and partycorn with more than one. I used to think they were pretty much the narwhals of the land, but it turns out there are many sorts of unicorns. Yeticorn, Robocorn, Platycorn, Horsicorn... they’re all really FUNicorn and totally out-of-this-world! You should come with me to their planet sometime!

Which is best—land or sea? What’s Jelly’s opinion?

Hmm, let’s sea... where have I landed on that? I don’t whaley know! What little I know of the land is pretty grand. Jelly shore has an opinion though – water works for him! And I suppose where I like best is to be with my best buddy, so... the sea for Jelly and me!

Do unicorns like waffles?

This Narwhalicorn sure does! And since they’re both waffley sweet and fun, I’m guessing many a unicorn likes waffles too. Next time I see a unicorn, I should ask if they have any good recipes! Oooo... perhaps something with sprinkles? And fudge! And caramel! And MARSHMALLOWS!!!

Any updates on Shark, Octopus, Turtle, Shelly, Otty, Mr. Blowfish, and Crab?

Shark has been getting ready for the annual Buoy Ball Bash. Octopus has been trying to learn how to play the xylophone, tuba, trombone, triangle, and sea cowbell all at the same time! Turtle and Shelly are currently at the 151st Seashell Shelters Mobile Convention. Otty is off on one of her biggest adventures yet! Apparently, she is searching for something called a siphonophore? She has been getting some help from some friendly nudibranchs. Mr. Blowfish is teaching a class on breathing exercises. It’s a gas! And Crab? He’s probably working on a new joke. Crab is so funny! Speaking of jokes... do you know why the crab blushed? It saw the ocean’s bottom!

How are you planning to celebrate Narwhaliday on November 18? How can fans celebrate along with you?

Oooo! Probably with some warm waffle pudding, some silly songs, and a good book! Let’s do those things together! Maybe we could even make a book told in song about warm waffle pudding?

Now that you’ve been to land and have partied with unicorns, what are your plans for your next adventure?

There are so many possibilities! It is hard to choose... but I think it might involve some dressing up. I love to wear costumes! Especially on holidays!
