Nonbinary teen Ash seeks out a hidden cabin their grandfather built so they can make a life for themself alone with their dog Chase, the only one that truly understands them. But Ash quickly discovers that a life alone isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. The graphic novel received a starred review from PW.

The Dark We Know by Wen-Yi Lee. Zando/Flynn, $19.99; ISBN 978-1-63893-058-7. Isadora Chang returns to the old mining town of Slater where an investigation into the disappearance of a popular teen leads to revelations about the suicides of her childhood friends. Enola’s Best Friend by Katie Kordesh. Rocky Pond, $18.99; ISBN 978-0-5936-2047-2. A perfect day between Enola and her grandmother comes to a halt when Grandma’s dog eats a cherished item of Enola’s.

Evidence!: How Dr. John Snow Solved the Mystery of Cholera by Deborah Hopkinson, illus. by Nik Henderson. Knopf, $19.99; ISBN 978-0-5934-2681-4. Hopkinson and Henderson immerse readers in a close city neighborhood where deadly cholera has broken out and Dr. John Snow investigates the outbreak. Ghostsmith by Nicki Pau Preto. McElderry, Aug. 13 $21.99 ISBN 978-1-66591-062-0. In the conclusion of the House of the Dead duology, Wren struggles to come to terms with a familial revelation as she and her friends attempt to stop an oncoming war.

Give Me Something Good to Eat by D.W. Gillespie. Delacorte, $17.99; ISBN 978-0-593-65181-0. A decades-old witch’s spell holds seventh grader Mason Miller’s small town in peril in this thriller by Gillespie.

Godfather Death by Sally Nicholls, illus. by Júlia Sardà. Viking, $19.99; ISBN 978-0-593-69210-3. Nicholls pens a haunting story about a poor fisherman searching for an honest man to serve as godfather of his newborn son. The picture book received a starred review from PW.

Kisses, Codes, and Conspiracies by Abigail Hing Wen. Feiwel and Friends, $19.99; ISBN 978-1-250-88323-0. Tan and Winter’s new relationship is tested when Tan’s ex-girlfriend from Shanghai returns after stealing from her billionaire father.

Let’s Go, Coco! by Coco Fox. HarperAlley, $24.99; ISBN 978-0-06-325641-5. Left alone following her best (and only) friend Blair’s move from Indiana to Boston, sixth grader Coco attempts to make new friends. It’s only after she literally falls into a group of girls that Coco begins to learn—via trial and error—how to be a good companion.

Lion Dancers by Cai Tse. Simon and Schuster, $23.99; ISBN 978-1-66592-724-6; $13.99 paper ISBN 978-1-6659-2723-9. Two years after Wei quit lion dancing and abandoned his best friend and dance partner, Hung, Wei’s passion for the sport reignites, and he wants to rejoin a lion dance team. The only problem is that Hung is also on the team, and he wants nothing to do with Wei.

Little Monster Says Goodnight by David Slonim. Chronicle, $17.99; ISBN 978-1-79721-665-2. Slonim plays familiar bedtime routines for laughs in this not-so-scary look at how Momster and Big Monster help Little Monster settle in for the night.

The Maid and the Crocodile by Jordan Ifueko (Amulet, $19.99; ISBN 978-1-4197-6435-6). In this companion novel set within the Raybearer universe, Sade hopes to use her gift as a Curse Eater to help her find a job as a maid, but soon becomes embroiled with Crocodile God, who has his own plans for her powers.

Zombie Apocalypse Running Club by Carrie Mac. Crown, $19.99; ISBN 978-1-524771-04-1. Sixteen-year-old twins Soren and Eira must get their cardio game on-point if they hope to survive the zombie apocalypse that’s descending upon a small Alaskan town.
