Penguin Young Readers has announced the publication of Chasten Buttigieg’s debut picture book, Papa’s Coming Home, due out on May 13, 2025. Jill Santopolo, VP and publisher of Penguin imprint Philomel acquired world rights; Dan Taylor will illustrate.
Papa’s Coming Home highlights the connection between children and their families and showcases a parent’s affection. The book is inspired, in part, by Buttigieg’s own family. Buttigieg is the husband of Pete Buttigieg, Secretary of Transportation and former presidential candidate, and the pair currently reside in Michigan with their two children.
“This story came from a desire to see a family that looks like my own in the pages of a picture book and follows a day full of excitement and hijinks that many families will relate to,” Buttigieg said in a statement.
Santopolo said in a statement, “Papa’s Coming Home is both humorous and poignant. I know this book will soon become a favorite in many households as parents and kids giggle, smile, and hug their way through the story.”
The picture book is Buttigieg’s third book, following his memoir I Have Something to Tell You and its adaptation for young readers. Creative Artists Agency represented the author, and Susan Penny at the Bright Agency represented the illustrator.
