Ten years after the release of her bestseller We Were Liars, which became a TikTok sensation, E. Lockhart returns to the same universe in her new YA psychological thriller We Fell Apart, out from Delacorte Press on November 4. World rights were acquired by former Delacorte Press publisher Beverly Horowitz from agent Elizabeth Kaplan at her eponymous agency.
In this addition to the series, Matilda Klein heads to Hidden Beach in search of her father at their seaside home but instead finds three teen boys: Meer, Brock, and Tatum. After an evening visiting nearby Beechwood island goes awry, Matilda determines she must uncover her family’s secrets. Meanwhile, finding out the truth behind the intentions of her new companions becomes ever more difficult. Fans of the first book of the series and its prequel Family of Liars may recognize Beechwood, a familiar setting in the Liars canon.
“This new book offers new characters, new family tragedies, and a huge new love story, while opening up the world I built in the first two books,” Lockhart said in a statement. “I hope my readers will be completely wrecked.”
This year marks both an honoring of the past and a step into the series’ future. In celebration of the 10-year anniversary, Delacorte will release deluxe editions of We Were Liars and Family of Liars on May 6 that will feature sprayed edges and exclusive content. Fans can also look forward to seeing the characters of We Were Liars hitting the screen with the Prime adaptation set to release in June.
“From the first page, you’re plunged into a world of opulence, betrayal, and suspense,” said Wendy Loggia, VP and publisher of Delacorte Press, in a statement. “It’s classic Lockhart at her best: raw, provocative, and exquisitely penned.”
