A battle of wills unfolds when a teal-colored turtle encounters a green turtle, sporting an oversize yellow bear suit, who coolly declares itself a “for-real bear.” The picture book received a starred review from PW.

Blake the Snake Bakes a Cake by Amy Young, illus. by Alison Young. Viking, $18.99; ISBN 978-0-5936-2174-5. There’s “lots at stake” as the eponymous protagonist tries—and tries—to achieve a culinary goal: whipping up a birthday cake for a friend’s party. The picture book received a starred review from PW.

Book Comes Home: A Banned Book’s Journey by Rob Sanders, illus. by Micah Player. Random House, $18.99; ISBN 978-0-593-81368-3. Sanders and Player explore book banning from the perspective of a dog-eared library volume.

The Couch in the Yard by Kate Hoefler, illus. by Dena Seiferling. Holiday House/Porter, $18.99; ISBN 978-0-8234-5675-8. Headed out for their nightly outing, a caregiver and three children watch the world unfold before them on an outdoor couch.


The Girl and the Robot by Claribel A. Ortega and Oz Rodriguez. Disney Hyperion, $17.99; ISBN 978-1-3680-8185-6. When her school is invited to participate in a major robotics competition that promises a cash prize for the winner, Mimi’s friends persuade her to compete with them. The tweens’ plans are derailed by the arrival of Dot-E, a robot from outer space that needs their help reuniting with its family.

Harlem Honey: The Adventures of a Curious Kid by Tamron Hall, illus. by Ebony Glenn. HarperCollins, $19.99; ISBN 978-0-063-24484-9. Young Moses, who feels homesick for Texas, joins new friends in New York delivering honey to Harlem landmarks, helping him see the beauty of his new home.

I Am the Swarm by Hayley Chewins. Viking, $19.99; ISBN 978-0-593-62386-2. Nell Strand manifests her matrilineal magic, but her excitement is undercut by her acute awareness of the dangers of her bloodline’s abilities. The YA book received a starred review from PW.

I Loved You First by Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Pierce Bush, illus. by Ramona Kaulitzki (Little, Brown, $19.99; ISBN 978-0-316-52529-9). In the third installment in the Sisters First series, parents and children appreciate the impact of quality time together.

Once for Yes by Allie Millington. Feiwel and Friends, $17.99; ISBN 978-1-250326-98-0. A nondescript, nearly 50-year-old apartment building named the Odenburgh helps narrate this gentle novel about grief. The middle grade book received a starred review from PW.

To Steal from Thieves by M.K. Lobb. Little, Brown, $19.99; ISBN 978-0-316575-48-5. After Zaria Mendoza’s famed alchemologist father dies, she’s recruited by con artist Kane Durante to use her alchemological talents to help him steal a famous necklace from the Great Exhibition for his terrifying boss.
