Magic Cat has acquired a series of interactive board books from celebrity chef, restauranteur, television host, and cookbook author Jamie Oliver. The first four titles in Jamie’s Little Food Library—Let’s Make PANCAKES, Let’s Make PIZZA, Let’s Make PASTA, and Let’s Make COOKIES—are slated for worldwide release on October 9. The deal was announced this morning, on the first day of the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. World rights were acquired by Jenny Broom, co-founder of Magic Cat, directly from the author. Based in the U.K., Magic Cat has distribution and co-edition agreements with Abrams.
“No one has done more to promote healthy eating among young people than Jamie Oliver, and we believe this series will be a game-changer for families everywhere,” Broom said in a statement. The first thing we do on a rainy day is reach for a wooden spoon—but there is nothing in the preschool space to cater to this need. We see enormous potential.”
This series marks Oliver’s first food books designed specifically for children. Illustrated by graphic designer Adrian Johnson and featuring lift-flaps, each of the books introduces young readers to first words while following a simple recipe and promoting healthy eating habits.
Over the course of his 25-year career, Oliver has sold more than 50 million books worldwide, according to the publisher, and his TV series are watched by millions of viewers. He is also an active partner with the youth movement BiteBack, with a mission of encouraging young people to embrace the benefits of cooking healthy and sustainable meals.
Oliver discovered his own love of cooking at the age of eight while helping at his parents’ pub, The Cricketers, in Clavering, Essex. “Fostering a healthy relationship with food at a young age is so important—it sets kids up for life,” he said in a statement. “What I love about these books is that I’m able to share my passion for food with the youngest of readers in a fun and interactive way. With beautiful illustrations from Adrian to bring it all to life, I know parents are going to appreciate these books, too.”
