Every Child a Reader, the charitable arm of the Children’s Book Council, has announced the relaunch of the Get Caught Reading campaign, which provides educators and librarians with free posters to promote a love of learning through literacy. The 2019 poster features an image of Olympic gold medalist Laurie Hernandez reading while performing a split; it will be available beginning on October 22.
During her keynote address at the CBC annual meeting in New York on September 27, Hernandez spoke about her path to becoming a gymnast, as well as her lifelong love of reading. She recounted how her mother always emphasized that “gymnastics is a passion; education is a necessity.” Hernandez’s first picture book, She’s Got This, illustrated by Nina Mata, has just been released by HarperCollins.
Launched in 1999 by the American Association of Publishers, the Get Caught Reading program is now managed by Every Child a Reader. The campaign is sponsored by KPMG and the Lois Lenski Covey Foundation. Teachers and librarians can sign up online to receive 10 free Get Caught Reading posters to share with their communities.
