The winners of the 2019 Bologna Prize for the Best Children’s Publishers of the Year were announced at a ceremony Monday night at Palazzo d’Accursio. Prizes were given to one publisher in each of six different geographic regions. The awards, which are presented by the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in collaboration with the Association of Italian Publishers, were determined from nominations made by a jury of publishers, and were selected on the basis of “creativity, courage, and the quality of the editorial choices.”
The winners are:
Africa: Sub-Saharan Publishers (Ghana)
Founded in 1992, the publisher specializes in children’s books addressing environmental issues.
Asia: Locus Publishing Company (Taiwan)
The publisher, which was founded in 1996, seeks to promote titles that reflect a sense of adventure.
Europe: Orfeu negro (Portugal)
With a focus on the arts and illustrated books, Orfeu negro ventured in children’s publishing in 2007.
North America: Comme des géants (Canada)
The Canadian indie publisher specializes in books for infants with an emphasis on narrative and graphics.
Central/South America: Limonero (Argentina)
Educational publisher Limonero expanded into illustrated books in 2014.
Oceania: Scribble Kids’ Books (Australia)
The final prize was given to this eclectic Australian children’s publisher.
