This week, Epic Reads holds a timely talk; Elizabeth Wein has an ‘enigmatic’ virtual tour; Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver have a launch that’s out of this world; and Brown Books Publishing gets into the Christmas spirit.
Conversation Peace
Epic Reads’ and Belletrist’s Why Not YA book club presented a Facebook Live event on November 17 featuring the co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement, Patrisse Khan-Cullors (When They Call You A Terrorist, Wednesday Books). Belletrist co-founder Karah Preiss (top l.) and Epic Reads marketing director Ebony LaDelle (top r.) spoke with Khan-Cullors (bottom c.) about the origin of the BLM movement, interrogating contemporary narratives of a post-racial society, community organizing, building safe spaces, being a queer person of color, and more.
The Name of the Game
Elizabeth Wein embarked on a virtual tour last month for her latest WWII historical YA thriller, The Enigma Game (Little, Brown), set in the same world as her award-winning Code Name Verity and its companions. The weeklong tour featured digital appearances at five indie bookstores across the country, with guests including authors Steve Sheinkin, Sherri L. Smith, and Monica Hesse. Loving the Alien
On November 19, the two Bay Area-based Book Passage stores hosted a virtual launch event on Twitch featuring actor Henry Winkler and Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators executive director Lin Oliver, co-authors of Lights, Camera, Danger! Alien Superstar #2 (Amulet) in conversation with Varian Johnson (Twins, Graphix) and Lisa Yee (DC Super Hero Girls series, Random House). Amanda Conran at Book Passage served as moderator as the authors discussed their humorous middle grade titles.
