As Teacher Appreciation Week kicks off on May 2, ThriftBooks, the world’s largest indie online used book seller, honors educators by launching a new rewards program for them called ThriftBooks 4 Teachers.

Verified educators, faculty, and staff who sign up to participate will receive a free book valued at $7 for every four books they purchase—called the “Every 5th Book Free” educator benefit. Additionally, new ThriftBooks 4 Teachers members will automatically be granted Literati status—the highest points-earning level within the existing ThriftBooks ReadingRewards program—so that they can rack up additional free book credits at a faster rate.

As a special bonus, anyone who purchases a teacher- or school-themed gift card via ThriftBooks.com between May 3 and May 5 will be eligible to win 100–500 books (a maximum $2,500 value) to be donated to the winner’s chosen verified educator or school. This donation is designed to supplement an existing school library collection or classroom library, or to jumpstart a library collection for a school that currently lacks library materials.

Barbara Hagen, ThriftBooks v-p of sales and marketing, spoke about how the idea for the program took root. “We know many teachers and educators across the country will often use their own funds to purchase their school or classroom supplies,” she said. “All of us here at ThriftBooks would like to help make those funds go a little bit further, each and every day. It only seemed logical to bring our resources to educators and ultimately to students. With ThriftBooks 4 Teachers and the free books provided, we hope educators can stock and re-stock their classrooms or school libraries with one of the most fundamental elements for success in learning: access to books.”
