This month authors ran into their peers on launch day; gave a reading to a unique audience; showcased their work at an airport art installation; held pre-pub celebrations in Brooklyn; held interactivities for guests; and commemorated 30 years of work.

Serendipity in the City

Hippo Park, Astra Books for Young Readers’ newest imprint, celebrated its launch with events happening across New York City. En route to an event on the Upper West Side, Jamie Michalak (r.) and Sabine Timms (l.), author-illustrator of the picture book COME ON: There’s a Party in This Book!, ran into comedian and author Amy Sedaris (c.).

Goats Get a Lesson

On October 15, author-illustrator duo Mac Barnett (r.) and Jon Klassen (l.) gave a reading of their picture book Three Billy Goats Gruff to a rather unusual audience in Petaluma, Calif. Barnett and Klassen read their latest work to a herd of goats at a pygmy goat farm.

Minnesota Artists are Taking Off

Guests at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport can now spend time before their flight discovering local artists via a new art installation. Curated by Catherine Urdahl and Sarah Warren and designed by Timi Bliss, the exhibit, entitled “Stars of the North Storytime,” displays cover art and illustrations of children’s books by Minnesota artists. The authors of the picture book Where We Come From, John Coy (top r.), Shannon Gibney (top l.), Sun Yung Shin (bottom r.), and Diane Wilson (bottom l.), gave a reading followed by another reading from Peter Pearson (top c.) of his book How to Eat an Airplane.

A Brooklyn Debut

Patricia Park (l.) celebrated the upcoming release of her debut YA book Imposter Syndrome and Other Confessions of Alejandra Kim with a pre-publication event at Wild East Brewing in Brooklyn, N.Y. Park appeared in conversation with Random House copy chief and author Benjamin Dreyer (r.).

A Joyful Demonstration

Earlier this month, the La Jolla Riford Library in La Jolla, Calif., welcomed Rafael López for the launch of his picture book The Little Book of Joy by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Lopez gave a live drawing demonstration, depicting a picture of young Desmond Tutu as shown in the book.

30 Years of Magic and Scares

Authors R.L. Stine (l.) and Mary Pope Osborne made a joint appearance at the Library of Congress to celebrate the 30th anniversaries of their Goosebumps and Magic Tree House series. The occasion was a family-friendly event, starting with Halloween activities and followed by a conversation between the two authors where they discussed the longevity of their work, and a book signing.
