This month authors celebrated Chinese culture at a Lunar New Year event; discussed a graphic novel adaptation of a nonfiction volume; and got nostalgic at a launch event.

New Year, New Celebrations

Author Amélie Wen Zhao (l.) celebrated the release of Song of Silver, Flame Like Night (Delacorte) with a Lunar New Year celebration at Barnes & Noble in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood on January 19. Zhao was joined by fellow authors Elizabeth Lim (c.) and Chloe Gong (r.) for a panel discussion, q&a, and book signing followed by a Lion Dance by performers from the Chinese Freemasons Athletic Club to close the evening.

An ‘Explosive’ Launch

On January 23, author Steve Sheinkin (r.) and illustrator Nick Bertozzi (l.) appeared at the Cleveland Park Public Library in Washington, D.C., to mark the release of their graphic novel adaptation of their award-winning nonfiction book Bomb: The Race to Build—and Steal—the World's Most Dangerous Weapon (Roaring Brook). The graphic novel explores the origins of the atomic bomb and the world’s race to control what would become one of its most deadly weapons.

Going ‘Retro’

Skylight Books in Los Angeles welcomed co-authors and real-life couple Jarrod Shusterman (l.) and Sofía Lapuente (r.) for the release of their YA thriller Retro (S&S) on January 25. The pair discussed their collaborative process, musical inspirations, and were joined by author Robbie Couch (c.).
