This month an author kicked off his book tour with a hands-on arts and crafts event; publishing staff dressed as beloved characters; and a Texas politician made an appearance at a debut author’s launch event.
All Hands on Deck
Yuval Zommer’s U.S. tour for his picture book Big Book of Nature Art (Thames & Hudson), the latest entry in his Big Book series, began on June 16 with a pre-publication arts workshop at RJ Julia Booksellers in Madison, Conn. Young artists used materials found in nature to create their own crafts. Pictured: Zommer (r.) with children’s and YA event coordinator Kayla O’Donnell (l.).
Think Pink
On June 23, Candlewick Press staff members celebrated National Pink Day by dressing like characters from Prince in Pink, the 10th book in the Princess in Black series by Shannon Hale, Dean Hale, and LeUyen Pham. In Prince in Pink, black-clad Princess Magnolia befriends Prince Valerian, who has kept his love of all things pink a secret.
Texans Unite
Dan Solomon celebrated the release of his YA debut novel, The Fight for Midnight (North Star/Flux), with an event at BookPeople in Austin. Solomon held a conversation with journalist Jessica W. Luther and signed copies of his book for attendees. The Fight for Midnight follows the journey of Texan teen Alex Collins, when he’s called by his crush to attend a protest over Texas senator Wendy Davis’s filibuster of the abortion bill HB2 in 2013, and must contend with his political feelings bleeding into his friendships.
