Recently, a horror writer returned to his hometown for a spooky event, an author sought out the real-life subject of her picture book, siblings celebrated their final book event together, students explored a construction vehicle, an author found a serendipitous mural, and writers enjoyed an awards ceremony.

A Stinetingling Event

The Drexel Theater, in collaboration with local indie Gramercy Books in Columbus, Ohio, welcomed hometown horror writer R.L. Stine on October 14 for an event titled “R.L. Stine’s Shocks & Shivers.” At the sold-out event, Stine gave readings of his spooky tales and signed books for attendees.

A Golden Opportunity

On October 13, Sibert medalist Elizabeth Partridge made a trip to the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center to celebrate the release of her new book, Golden Gate: Building the Mighty Bridge (Chronicle), which highlights the construction of the San Francisco landmark.

A Sibling Debut

TV personality Ryan Seacrest (c.) and his sister/collaborator Meredith Seacrest Leach (r.) made an appearance at Barnes & Noble at The Grove in Los Angeles on October 14 for the final stop of their book tour for their picture book, The Make-Believers. The pair gave a storytime reading with the book’s illustrator, Bonnie Lui (l.), and then they discussed their collaboration and creative process. The debut picture book from the writers encourages children to use their imagination. See our interview with the authors here.

Rinker to the Rescue

Sherri Duskey Rinker recently went on tour to share her new picture book and the latest addition to the Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site series, Garbage Crew to The Rescue (Chronicle). Illustrated by AG Ford, the book follows a troupe of construction trucks as they work together to clean up a neighborhood. On September 26, Rinker made an appearance at the Midtown Public Charter School in Jackson, Miss., for a school visit in partnership with local bookstore Lemuria Book Store and the Mississippi Book Festival, where she donated a copy of the book to each student in kindergarten and first grade. The students were also invited to see a garbage truck, which made a stop during the visit. Seen here (from l.) are community engagement director of the Mississippi Book Festival Tonja M. Murphy, Rinker, and Delta Waste Solutions operations manager Jason Tait.

Spread Your Wings

During her tour for her new middle grade book Onyx & Beyond (Feiwel and Friends), author Amber McBride made a school visit to The Museum School in Decatur, Ga., on September 30. While there, McBride posed with a wing mural, in reference to the book’s cover. The middle grade novel follows the titular protagonist Onyx, who dreams of exploring space, while avoiding detection from Child Protective Services.

Book-tastic Outfits

The 2024 Massachusetts Book Awards ceremony took place on October 8 at the State House in Boston. Here authors (from l.) Federico Erebia, Crystal Maldonado, and Kate Fussner celebrate the occasion with festive outfits referencing their book covers and literature.
