Recently, an author presented to a sold-out crowd, a museum opened a new exhibit, a Texas literacy program brought an author to a local school, and an author utilized their platform to sponsor a book fair.


Checking In

On November 17, Kate DiCamillo closed out her fall tour for The Hotel Balzaar (Candlewick) with an appearance at the Grand Event Center in Northfield, Minn., in collaboration with Content Bookstore. The Hotel Balzaar, illustrated by Júlia Sardà, follows Marta as she wanders at the titular hotel and befriends a mysterious guest with wild stories. At the sold-out event, DiCamillo gave a presentation and read from the book. Here, she signs copies for a guest.


Opening the Doors to Freedom

The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Mass., recently celebrated the opening of “Free to Be You and Me...50 Years of Stories and Songs,” a new exhibition that highlights the impact of the 1972 record of the same name and its subsequent book spin-offs and television specials, which were created and executive produced by Marlo Thomas. Pictured at the exhibit’s opening are guest curator Margi Hofer (l.), executive director of the Coby Foundation, and Jennifer Schantz (r.), executive director of the Carle.


For the Kids

As part of the San Antonio Book Festival’s Authors in Schools program, on November 18, author Lincoln Peirce made a visit to the Majestic Theatre to share his Max & the Midknights series (Crown) with more than 1,000 students. The program pairs authors with low-income schools to showcase children’s books. Here Peirce presents onstage.


Book Fair Bonanza

Donors to Jami Attenberg’s annual #1000WordsofSummer project, which encourages writers to pen 1,000 words a day for two weeks, sponsored a Scholastic Book Fair for the students at Schaumburg Elementary in New Orleans last month. On November 2, more than 650 students received a free book from Nowhere Bookshop; here Attenberg greets students at the fair.
