  • Japanese Company Buys Kobo

    Japanese e-commerce company Rakuten, Inc., has reached an agreement with Indigo Books & Music to purchase all outstanding shares of international ebook retailer Kobo Inc., for $315 million.

  • B&N Debuts $249 Nook Tablet, Upgrades NookColor, Now $199

    As expected, Barnes & Noble will release the Nook Tablet, a new 7-inch multimedia reading and media device, priced at $249, on November 17. In addition, B&N is upgrading the NookColor and the Nook Simple Touch, and lowering their prices to $199 and $99, respectively.

  • iPad Sales Top 40 Million

    Apple has sold over 40 million iPads since the device was first introduced about 18 months ago, and sold 11.1 million devices in its most recent quarter, the company said yesterday. In the comparable quarter in 2010, Apple sold 4.2 million iPads.

  • AmazonLocal Gives Deals to Kindle Users

    Amazon announced that Kindle and Kindle 3G with Special Offers customers will soon start receiving special offers from AmazonLocal on their Kindle screensavers when they aren’t reading.

  • Sony to Release New e-Ink Reader in October

    Sony announced plans to release the Reader Wi-Fi, a wireless enabled 6-inch dedicated touchscreen eReader, in October. The Reader Wi-Fi will be priced at $149 and is designed to allow users to borrow books wirelessly from libraries.

  • Sony Tablets Coming in September

    Sony isn’t giving up. Although sales of its dedicated e-readers have lagged, today the company announced the launch of its first two Sony Tablet devices. The Android-powered Sony Tablet S is expected to be in stores by mid-September with prices starting at $499 and the Sony Tablet P will be out later this year.

  • Nook To Be Carried in P.C. Richard & Son

    Beginning September 4, appliance and electronics retailer P.C. Richard & Son will begin carrying Barnes and Noble's NOOK and related accessories in their 65 stores throughout the northeast.

  • E-readers Add Retailers

    The Barnes & Noble All-New Nook and Nook Color will be carried in Fred Meyer stores beginning July 30, while Toys 'R Us will begin carrying Amazon's Kindle on July 31.

    Canadian e-book retailer Kobo’s new $130 touch screen reader is lighter, cheaper and is said to be faster and more powerful. It’s definitely way cooler than the old Kobo reader, offering a new, sophisticated graphic home screen interface and it gives consumers the ability to easily synch their reading across desktop, phone and tablet devices. While none of this is unusual among the leading e-reading devices, Kobo continues to serve notice that it plans to compete in the international e-book market.

The device will go on sale June 10.

  • Wattpad Teams with Amanda Havard to Promote 'The Survivors'

    In what looks like a breakout marketing campaign for the site, Wattpad, an online writing and reading community focused on delivering content to mobile devices, is teaming up with emerging YA author Amanda Havard to launch a transmedia promotional campaign around her new novel The Survivors. The campaign will feature appearances by Havard at BEA next week as well as syndication and placement of excerpts from her book on Wattpad.com and through its mobile applications, original music and video releases, social media events and even a fashion campaign with on and offline components.
