Audible Assembles All-Star Cast
Matthew McConaughey, John C. McGinley, Minnie Driver, Josh Holloway, Pete Yorn, Trey Parker, and Matt Stone were in the studio to record entertainment lawyer Kevin Morris’s short story collection, White Man’s Problems for Audible. Each star read one of the nine stories in the book, which was originally self-published and released by Grove in December 2014. The audiobook goes on sale August 11.
Kaling Stepping into the Booth for RH
Mindy Kaling will read her newest book, Why Not Me?, on sale September 15 from Random House Audio. The creator and star of The Mindy Project follows her 2011 bestseller, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, with this collection, which touches on her “newfound super fame,” in addition to learning about what life is like as you get older and your friends start families.
Macmillan Lines Up ‘Purity’ Readers
Narrators Jenna Lamia, Dylan Baker, and Robert Petkoff will be recording Purity, the forthcoming novel by Jonathan Franzen, for Macmillan Audio. Baker has previously read the author’s work: in 2002, he won an Audie Award for Abridged Fiction for the audiobook of Franzen’s The Corrections. The new audiobook goes on sale September 1; Farrar, Straus and Giroux is releasing the much-anticipated book in hardcover on the same day.
Black Sets Up ‘Monster’ Shop
Actor Jack Black is set to voice Little Shop of Monsters, the first collaboration between R.L. Stine and illustrator Marc Brown, for Hachette Audio. Black will also be playing Stine in the new Goosebumps movie, out this October. The book, which goes on sale August 25, has a “narrative voice reminiscent of The Monster at the End of this Book, but with Stine’s signature spooky charm,” Hachette said.
Drake Gets ‘Taken’ at Scholastic
Actress Stephanie Drake, best known for her portrayal of Don Draper’s secretary Meredith on Mad Men, has been cast to read The Taken by Inbali Iserles, the first book in Foxcraft, a new middle-grade fantasy trilogy, for Scholastic Audio. “Drake’s youthful voice perfectly captures the spirit of this story about a young fox named Isla who is forced to flee into the cold, gray world of the furless humans, when her family’s den is set ablaze,” the publisher said. The audiobook goes on sale October 1.
Jewel Tells a Story at Blackstone
Singer-songwriter Jewel was in the Blackstone Audio recording studio to read her memoir, Never Broken: Songs Are Only Half the Story, which covers her childhood, journey to fame, marriage, and motherhood. “We are so excited that Jewel was able to make time in her schedule to record her new memoir,” Blackstone said. “Her beautiful voice, so familiar to her many fans, will make this a fantastic audiobook.” Blackstone will put out the audiobook on September 15, the same day Blue Rider Press will release the title in hardcover.
Day, Whedon Unite at S&S
Actress and online entertainment maven Felicia Day will read the audiobook edition of her memoir, You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost), for Simon & Schuster Audio. Screenwriter and director Joss Whedon will read the introduction he wrote for the book. S&S will publish the title on August 11.
Karr Delves into Memoir at Harper
The Liars’ Club and Lit author Mary Karr recorded her new book, The Art of Memoir for HarperAudio. The book “lays bare Karr’s own process” of memoir writing, according to Harper, breaking down “key elements of great literary memoir.” The audiobook goes on sale September 15.
