    Fans of Linda Evans, ever immortalized as the blonde beauty Krystle Carrington in the Dynasty television series, will be surprised to know that she was once afraid to speak in front of an audience. “I couldn’t even do a book report,” she tells Show Daily. Her junior high made her take a drama course, but even after working in television for years, the actress balked at performing live in front of a large group of people. “I told my agent, ‘Don’t ever, ever, ever make me get up in front of people and do a play or anything’—I thought I would die.” Yet when an opportunity came up five years ago to star onstage with former Dynasty nemesis Joan Collins in a touring production of the play Legends, Evans decided to face her worst nightmare.

    Katherine Paterson, two-time Newbery winner and the current National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, has teamed up with her husband, John Paterson, to write The Flint Heart. Freely abridged from Eden Phillpotts’s 1910 story of the same title, this middle-grade novel will be published by Candlewick in September. Illustrated by John Rocco, this book tells of a brother and sister who must rescue humans, fairies, and animals from the dark influence of a magical amulet created in the Stone Age.

    Tor is publishing debut novels by the rapper, actor, and Law & Order star Tracy Marrow, better known as “Ice-T,” and his wife, actor and model Nicole “Coco” Marrow. It’s a little early for fall tour details, but the celebrity couple is expected to do some events together in Los Angeles, New York, and New Jersey (where they live). “I think the main thing that we do is, we support each other,” says Ice-T. “We motivate each other.” Adds Coco: “You don’t need a lot of people, you just need that one person to push you along in life.”

  • BEA 2011: 'Great Debate' Finds Publishers Relevant

    The Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) opened its 27th annual “Publishing University” at BookExpo America on May 22 with the “Great Debate,” a discussion first introduced at the 2011 London Book Fair. This time, it featured an especially provocative statement for discussion by a panel of experts: “Authors and readers are all that matter. Publishers will soon be irrelevant.”

  • BEA 2011: Second DIY Conference Celebrates Growth, Addresses Challenges

    The second annual DIY Authors Conference and Marketplace at BEA took place on May 21 at the Javits Center in NYC. According to conference organizers, attendance was up slightly from 2010, approaching 300 registrations. More than a dozen presentations by experts in various aspects of self-publishing were offered. Kicking off with an articulate, realistic keynote, mainstream publishing veteran Alan Rinzler of John Wiley & Sons set the tone of the event, with his conviction that there has been a true shift of power in the book world in 2010 and 2011, and that “this is the best time for writers” in history… although not without challenges or pitfalls.

  • BEA Announces New York Book Week Events

    BEA officials have announced a series of events in support of New York Book Week, a celebration which embraces literary and book activity during the week of BEA beginning Monday, May 23. Notably, the Apple Store in Soho, at 103 Prince Street, will conduct a weeklong series of Meet the Author events in conjunction with NYBW.

  • Bloggers vs. BlogWorld

    The BlogWorld & New Media Expo is on Tuesday, May 24, not Friday, May 27, as our report said. This is the first time for this event on the East Coast, and it is complimentary for BEA badge holders; May 24 is the day of the main conference, and the BlogWorld & New Media exhibits are May 25–26. On May 27 is the second annual Book Blogger Convention at BookExpo America, a one-day event providing instruction, interaction, and creative space for book bloggers and publishing industry professionals.

  • Children's Art Auction at BEA to Benefit Free Speech for Kids

    When the Association of Booksellers for Children merged with the American Booksellers Association last year, an ABC Children’s Group was created within ABA to serve the interests of ABC members. That group is relaunching a children’s art auction and reception that formerly benefited the ABC, which will take place on the Wednesday evening of BookExpo America this year.

  • Riordan and Patterson to Appear at Lincoln Center During BEA

    Rick Riordan and James Patterson will participate in a live event on May 25 at Lincoln Center in New York City. Billed as “An Evening with Rick Riordan and James Patterson, hosted by Al Roker," the event will take place on the Wednesday night of BookExpo America at Alice Tully Hall at 6:30 PM.
